DEEP BLUE SEA (1999 USA)

Ben Meyers’ rating: 3.6|5.0 Starsììì

Deep Blue Sea is supposed to be an action/thriller, but performs at a subpar level partially because any shark movie after Jaws seems to fall short of that original shark thriller. The dialogue feels like ‘I’ve heard this before’ and the script does not seem to flow well. It is all action and little storyline. Watch for Thomas Jane from The Punisher in this movie. LL Cool J and Samuel L. Jackson are also cast in the film which gives it a solidness that it may have lacked otherwise.

Storyline

A research facility attempts to find a way to halt degenerated brain cells in humans with shark research, but the research goes awry as the sharks begin attacking people.

Additional Thanks

Thank You to Director Renny Harlin for directing efforts. Thank you to Executive Producers Bruce Berman, Duncan Henderson, and Jonathan Schwartz for making the film possible. Additional characters/cast include: Carter Blake (Thomas Jane), Dr. Susan McAlester (Saffron Burrows), Russell Franklin (Samuel L. Jackson), Janice Higgins (Jacqueline McKenzie), Tom Scoggins (Michael Rapaport), Jim Whitlock (Stellan Skarsgård), Preacher (LL Cool J), Brenda Kerns (Aida Turturro), and Boat Captain (Cristos).

Buy a ticket? Yes? No? Maybe?

Maybe. The actors: Thomas Jane, Samuel L. Jackson, LL Cool J, Stellen Skargård, Aida Turturro, and the legendary Frank Welker perform very well together and are a pleasure to see.
