2036 ORIGIN UNKNOWN (Laemmle Monica Film Center Santa Monica California USA 2018)

Ben Meyers’ rating: 3.2|5.0 Starsììì

2036 Origin Unknown
works slowly. It seems difficult to find reason within the story for sequential events and therefore comes off as mind bending without sufficient resolution for the conclusion. Read a plotline before going.

THE RED VIOLIN * (Theatrical Release USA 1999)

Ben Meyers’ rating: 4.6|5.0 Starsìììì

The Red Violin—
classic entertainment—is intriguing and saturates itself with a decidedly European flavor throughout its story. Samuel L. Jackson plays a quite different role in this film and as usual gives it his best. His supporting cast helps move the story along in a flowing way that is well received. It is a well-done story.

simple story—serves the child audience quite nicely. While it is not a child/adult share, it has just the right amount of adventure to keep the child engaged. Good work for Director Peggy Holmes.

CHAPPIE (Theatrical Release USA 2015)

Ben Meyers’ rating: 3.7|5.0 Starsììì

Chappie,
despite moving slowly, has an underlying humaneness that appeals and keeps one watching when one otherwise may not make that choice. It’s made for audiences who love robot movies and the possibilities a robotic future holds. The conclusion of the film is worth waiting for and makes the movie. While Hugh Jackman and Sigourney Weaver are terrific entertainers, they both seem miscast for their parts in this film...Jackman, because he is a nice guy trying to play the bad guy and Weaver because of the serious look with a straight face. Dav Patel makes one want to see more of his acting in other films to examine his range and depth.

PAYBACK (Theatrical Release USA 1999)

Ben Meyers’ rating: 4.2|5.0 Starsìììì

Payback—
gritty and realistic—stars Mel Gibson. It has a good, solid storyline and serves as a good guy flick. The venue is fresh and well-chosen. This film turns upside down, just as the Paul Newman and Robert Redford film Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid did, by making the protagonist the bad guy instead of the traditional, ethical, wear-the-white-hat good guy. This movement makes an interesting watch.

GI JEWS: JEWISH AMERICANS IN WORLD WAR II (Video Release USA 2017)

Ben Meyers’ rating: 4.6|5.0 Starsìììì

GI Jews: Jewish Americans in World War II—
terrific documentary—tells the Jewish perspective of American Jewish soldiers fighting during World War II. It’s a little redundant, but it informs about the many tasks and the many talents necessary to successfully support and move a country through war and a demographic group who contributed to that effort. The movie is well received and deserves its kudos for the work performed by Director Lisa Ades.

EVELYN (Theatrical Release USA 2002)

Ben Meyers’ rating: 3.4|5.0 Starsììì

Evelyn—
not Pierce Brosnan’s best acting performance—tells a story that needs to be told about changes in the way Ireland processes single parent home children. Terrific treat to hear Pierce Brosnan sing. His voice reminds one of Newfoundland folk songs as sung by Alan Mills in the 1950s. While the movie seems a little redundant due to its linear story telling method and the lack of second/third/fourth stories interweaving with the main story, the film moves along toward a memorable conclusion. It’s a capsule of Irish history where an Irish future is altered through the efforts of a single, persistent father.

LES SAISONS * (Seattle International Film Festival, Seattle, Washington USA 2016)

Ben Meyers’ rating: 3.6|5.0 Starsììì

Les Saisons—
great cinematography—becomes difficult to classify. At first the documentary seems to be a story about animals (like Animal Planet or Discovery shows). Then, the viewer realizes that this filming has been accomplished over several years with the repetitive theme of an animal gets killed or dies...some survive a season, some do not, and a certain uncomfortable redundancy appears which reminds one of conversations with people who greet each day, year after year with the same conversation about the weather. At the end of the show, one feels that they just watched a message movie and are left with the question of what exactly is the message?

Maybe. For the artistic effect and the terrific cinematography, give this movie a whirl. It could serve as a background flick for parties due to its unique presentation where cinematography dominates narration. But, programs such as Animal Planet seem to offer more for time and money spent, especially for children.
