HEIDI (Theatrical Release Austria 2015)

Ben Meyers’ rating: 3.6|5.0 Starsììì

Heidi,
if Shirley Temple had not already made this movie in 1937, this 2015 Austrian remake of the Heidi story would be considered quite good. Unfortunately, the original Heidi stands alone as do the originals of The Sound of Music, My Fair Lady, Wizard of Oz, Annie, Gone With the Wind, Giant, To Kill A Mockingbird, Marty, 12 Angry Men, It’s A Wonderful Life, The Godfather, Rocky (to name just a few) movies that do not ever need to be remade. While one hesitates to say that this 2015 remake is a poor remake of the original 1937 film, it just cannot compare to the original movie. It does have some unique perks, but it fails to capture that complete innocence that the first Shirley Temple caught so exquisitely so that it is unduplicatable. This film does not have the flow and continuity that the original Heidi has and does not capture the realism nor the reason of the first 1937 movie. Some scenes are randomly thrown in without good transitioning as though the editing department either did not have enough film to provide good transitioning or the script was written in such a manner that there was no proper reason for the scene to be there. An example is the sledding scene. There seemed to be no real preparation for that scene.

Buy a ticket? Yes? No? Maybe?

Maybe. Industry professionals may want to view the two movies side by side to see why the first was so much better than the second as a study. But, the audience will definitely want to see the first Heidi to get the impact of story and quality of story on first view. The 1937 version deserves a permanent place in the family home video library as a quality classic family share movie that has terrific re-watchable status through many, many years.

PATRIOTS DAY (Theatrical Release USA 2016)

Ben Meyers’ rating: 4.6|5.0 Starsìììì

Patriots Day
—not a movie that one gets to see every day—works because of its emotional sense, excellent acting, and good portrayal of story. It’s a story of injustice done and good people who work to right that injustice.  Great work for Director Peter Berg (The Kingdom and Lone Survivor) for using very good directing skills to move this film along so well. Great work for Mark Wahlberg, John Goodman, J.K. Simmons, and Kevin Bacon for delivering a believable and realistic story filled with heart, suspense, and action. Good timing of scenes and events.

SNIPER: SPECIAL OPS (DVD Release Netherlands 2016)

Ben Meyers’ rating: 3.0|5.0 Starsììì

Sniper: Special Ops
has a terrific title but does not deliver on the title. Most of the challenge revolves around portrayal of story line. Steven Segal does not assume his character role well nor do the rest of the cast. The supporting cast has the brawn, but do not have the acting ability to put the story across well on screen. It seems not enough budget has been allowed for special effects so that some of the fault in the movie could be partially redeemed in outstanding effects.

STAND AND DELIVER (Theatrical Release USA 1988)

Ben Meyers’ rating: 4.4|5.0 Starsìììì

Stand and Deliver
—the slow start leaves the audience with a ‘not sure where this film is going in relation to how good or bad it’s going to be', but once into the story, one begins to feel the direction of the film. This movie reminds one of Freedom Writers, a story all about changing lives for the better. The movie emphasizes repetitive good work makes a difference and changes the world into a better place. Great work for Director Ramon Mendez for showing the power of love and steadfast endurance go a long way toward changing outcomes. This story shows the best in people. WOW! What a film! Great acting by Edward James Olmos.

I’LL SEE YOU IN MY DREAMS (Theatrical Release USA 2015)

Ben Meyers’ rating: 4.3|5.0 Starsìììì

I’ll See You in My Dreams—
another seasoned citizen movie where a couple does not follow moral protocol by setting a good example in good moral conduct for children and grandchildren This movie sends a message to future generations. It is not a good one. It encourages lax morals. This film would have been perfect without the bed scene and with a conclusion that had a clear vision for the future.

LITTLE NEMO: ADVENTURES IN SLUMBERLAND* (Theatrical Release Japan 1989)

Ben Meyers’ rating: 3.8|5.0 Starsììì

Little Nemo Adventures in Slumberland—
weird movie that seems to pander to a children’s audience and then plays around in a Matrix-styled intellectual framework. This film does not provoke interest until the last part of the movie and that part of the movie works like the old child’s game of pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey while blindfolded. The final scenes do not go well with this film. The movie builds up through the first and second scenes and then randomly chooses its exit strategy.

MEGAMIND (Theatrical Release USA 2010)

Megamind
—a superhero movie with a bit of a twist—has a good storyline and plays well. The acting/portrayal is good. The voices are well done. It is interesting, despite the fact, that there’s not a lot of ‘new and novel’ here to work well within the comic universe.

THE QUEST FOR CAMELOT (Theatrical Release USA 1998)

Ben Meyers’ rating: 3.7|5.0 Starsììì

The Quest for Camelot
—animated film—has a title that promises everything, but the movie doesn’t live up to its grand name. It almost seems as if the film’s main purpose is to promote the singers and their music rather than giving a good story that the music compliments. This can easily be a disappointment when looking for entertainment. The positive that one can look for is the singing voice of Brian White for the character Garrett. WOW! The voice is terrific! The rest of the singers are good, but bring nothing new to the screen.

RUDY: THE RUDY GIULIANI STORY (Television Release USA 2003)

Ben Meyers’ rating: 3.7|5.0 Starsììì

Rudy: the Rudy Giuliani Story
shows the determination and dedication of Rudy Giuliani to his position as Mayor of New York City and his work as a lawyer. The casting of Actor James Woods seems awkward as the resemblance to Giuliani both in looks and body language are not replicated well. The study of Giuliani in this movie is shallow and lacks full coverage. However, the life of Rudy Giuliani as of 2020 is still evolving. Without the final chapter the story in not complete. The movie is worth a watch, but be aware that this documentary does not provide an in-depth coverage of its subject matter.
