Dirty Harry tells the story of justice served outside law. Dirty Harry Callahan (Clint Eastwood) plays a police detective who decides to take a mentally deranged assassin, Scorpio (Andrew Robinson), out of the world of the living. Scorpio has threatened to assassinate random citizens until he gets extortion money from the San Francisco Mayor (John Vernon).  So, Harry Callahan, with some unwanted encouragement from the Chief of Police (John Larch) and the Mayor, takes the assignment of delivering the money to Scorpio. When Scorpio threatens to kill Harry Callahan and a girl hostage anyway, Harry’s new police partner, Chico Gonzales (Reni Santoni), intervenes and get injured in a gun battle with Scorpio. Harry Callahan takes his knife and stabs Scorpio in the leg. Scorpio staggers off and admits himself into a hospital. Because there is no valid evidence against Scorpio, he goes free. Harry, against orders, stalks Scorpio. Scorpio hires a man to beat him up so that he can be admitted to the hospital again. Scorpio then blames the beating on Harry. Then, Scorpio calls the police department to tell them that he has taken a school bus hostage. Harry Callahan takes matters into his own hands and the story runs to its violent conclusion.
