THE DIG (Netflix Release USA 2021)

 Ben Meyers’ rating: 4.7|5.0 Starsìììì

The Dig—terrific piece of entertainment with strong British presentation—accesses the talents of Ralph Fiennes and Carey Mulligan to explore how credit for work well done does not always receive its expected credit or recognition. This interesting story chooses the entertainment platform of Netflix to produce, market, and distribute. This is not the usual television-like fare that some of the newer platforms are rolling out while desperately attempting to attain an established and lasting presence in the newer Internet-streaming-based market. It’s good to see classic artists making this platform leap to provide such high-quality entertainment that can be enjoyed in the much more comfortable theatre environment of one’s home rather than the old-fashioned approach where one is forced to spend time navigating to another location solely for the purpose of entertainment while using time/more money to access that entertainment. This movie creates a deep impression. One of those stories that is not soon forgotten.

THE BEAUTICIAN AND THE BEAST (Theatrical Release USA 1997)

 Ben Meyers’ rating: 4.1|5.0 Starsìììì

The Beautician and the Beast—cute and simple—relies heavily on scenes from other movies especially the film, The Sound of Music. Because Fran Drescher, the main actress in this movie, works so differently than Julie Andrews, the actress in The Sound of Music, the similarities between the two stories are more obtuse and subtle. That difference creates a movie is a light, earthy, easy to follow story that requires little mental involvement to absorb. Watch for Timothy Dalton playing the role of Boris Pochenko.

THE WAY WEST (Theatrical Release USA 1967)

 Ben Meyers’ rating: 4.4|5.0 Starsìììì

The Way West uses a multiple story platform, many individual stories that intertwine into one story, to create interest and intrigue; heighten emotional tension balanced with the sentimental; and to establish injustice playing its teeter-totter with justice. This western film classically dramatizes the challenges of human life within the microcosm of a wagon train on its trek from Missouri to Oregon. Kirk Douglas, Robert Mitchum, and Richard Widmark along with an outstanding team of supporting actors/actresses play out this epic story to make it a piece of entertainment for the permanent home entertainment library. This is not the normal B-grade Western and it deeply earns its watch. Look for some of the great early entertainers: Jack Elam, Harry Carey Jr, John MItchum, Sally Fields, and Sam Elliot (who plays a Missouri townsman extra).

INVICTUS (Theatrical Release USA 2009)

 Ben Meyers’ rating: 4.6|5.0 Starsìììì

Invictus—wonderful, another outstanding film directed by Clint Eastwood—educates, enlightens, and entertains effortlessly. The movie delivers a message without the audience even knowing because in no way does the message overshadow the entertainment factor. Everything is here…the tension, the hope, the win, the failure, the justice, the injustice, the courage to speak up. The movie shows Mr. Mandela in a positive light. The movie works as a WOW! watch.

UFOTV PRESENTS THE DAY BEFORE DISCLOSER (Internet Release USA 2017)

 Ben Meyers’ rating: 4.3|5.0 Starsìììì

UFOTV Presents the Day Before Discloser—documentary—presents nothing new except a brief discussion of hybrid human life forms created by aliens…which still is not a new idea as ancient Hebrews taught about ‘Nephilim’, a hybrid life form, and the Greeks taught about sons and daughters of gods produced by gods mating with humans to produce offspring (see the stories of Diocletian’s daughters).

CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE FIFTH KIND * (Video Release USA 2020)

Ben Meyers’ rating: 4.7|5.0 Starsìììì

Close Encounters of the Fifth Kind—documentary—presents Dr. Greer’s personal evaluation of direct, conscious interaction with alien life forms within our dimensions. The film backs itself with moving photographs of alien life forms, how to contact them, and suggests that their presence is entirely benign. The documentary supports itself well, not on the level of finding Big Foot or Yetis, while supporting an ancient Hebrew thought process of pure heart. spotless/innocent mind allows supra-consciousness and contact of the fifth kind.

PENGUIN HIGHWAY (Theatrical Release Japan 2018)

 Ben Meyers’ rating: 3.6|5.0 Starsììì

Penguin Highway—animated movie—uses that wonderful animation that Studio Ghibli (Tokyo) uses. Not fancy, not hi-tech, slower paced, flat style that is calming and more peaceful than some American hi-tech animated features. This story has been put together well but its story is hard to follow, unclear in its meaning and reason for being told. The characters, however, have been well fleshed out and backed with good voicing.

? Yes? No? Maybe?

No. The story continually raises questions and suffers from no clarity of purpose or even a general understanding of its cultural significance. Two questions that becomes central to the film are: Why are there penguins and what is the ball of water called the ocean? Read a plotline before watching the film.

GLADIATORS OF ROME (Theatrical Release Italy 2012)

 Ben Meyers’ rating: 3.4|5.0 Starsììì

Gladiators of Rome—average animated film—has some perks in the training scenes and coliseum fights. But, the movie’s animation seems dark and the characters are not relatable or very likable…the main female character almost seems alien rather than human. There is no deeply established character development…the characters seem cold and different to the way humans operate. This movie performs almost like a cookie cutter movie or a quilt pieced together with scenes torn from other films.

OPERATION CHRISTMAS DROP (Netflix Release USA 2020)

 Ben Meyers’ rating: 4.0|5.0 Starsìììì

Operation Christmas Drop—humanitarian film—turns a final product much reminiscent of Hallmark movies. Nothing new here...an old story re-told again in a little different stage setting…leaves the audience with a ‘feel good’ about people and the things they do that are kind and compassionate. THE GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD (Theatrical Release USA 1965)

Ben Meyers’ rating: 4.2|5.0 Starsìììì

The Greatest Story Ever Told
is more expansive than the Mel Gibson version, The Passion of the Christ. But this film shows its age mostly because of its slow pacing. The timing may be a matter of a desire to make an epic film or to show respect to the subject matter. The movie accesses the talents of Max Von Sydow and is a good academic study for a thesis on his earlier works. Watch for Charlton Heston as John the Baptist.
