Maybe. This short film needs more run time to work and the beginning transition flashback scene is so subtle that it could be easily missed. If one misses that beginning transition, the concluding scenes cause confusion.

SHERLOCK HOLMES (Theatrical Release USA 2009)

Ben Meyers’ rating: 4.3|5.0 Starsìììì

Sherlock Holmes—great concept and retelling of a classic story—wisely chooses Robert Downy Jr. for the part of Sherlock Holmes and offsets him with Jude Law for the part of Doctor John Watson. This casting serves this British-themed film very well and throws the story into the higher entertainment class than most Sherlock Holmes films. The story is well done and very well directed by Director Guy Richie. It deserves its place in the home video library and has re-watchable status.

RISEN (Theatrical Release USA 2016)

 Ben Meyers’ rating: 3.5|5.0 Starsììì

Risen—opening scenes do not give a good hint whether the movie will rise to the top or fall flat—leaves it audience with the feeling that they were not entertained because of its less than impactful delivery. The strongest actors are Joseph Fiennes and Cliff Curtis. Curtis, who plays Jesus, does not have a large part in the movie but has been well-chosen by the casting department as he comes across as non-ostentatious. That humble, simple delivery allows an authenticity to his interpretation of his character that serves the movie well.

Maybe. The concept is interesting as it explores the Roman side of the story of the aftereffects of the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ. But, other than an examination of the possibilities of that concept, this film can be skipped.

Red Dog—an odd little movie—puts itself together in a series of short vignettes about a small Australian populations’ experiences with a red dog over its lifespan from the time it appears out of the desert, chooses its owner, and stays with that owner until its death. WAR AND PEACE (Theatrical Release USA 1956)

 Ben Meyers’ rating: 4.1|5.0 Starsìììì

War and Peace—drearily drags through 3 hours and 28 minutes—drowns itself in good to average acting and tells a story that, if told within a 2-hour timeframe, could have been interesting and worth watching. Little to no character development hampers this movie from its beginning to its end with the primary focus on Henry Fonda who the audience is expected to assume a necessary presence when, in fact, could be eliminated entirely. The strongest actor, despite having little screen presence and few dialogue lines, is Herbert Lom who plays Napoleon Bonaparte. This phenomena/oddity is like the amazing screen presence Michael Shannon obtained in his very small role in the movie The World Trade Center. War and Peace definitely captures epic status, but that status remains rather hidden under heavy doses of exposition and all the bells and whistles that sing ‘epic movie’ which serve their own purpose but over the whole run of the film overpowers and hampers its ability to retain audience interest.
