RIO (Theatrical Release USA 2011)

Ben Meyers’ rating: 4.3|5.0 Starsìììì

Rio—one of the best animated films since Blue Sky Studios’ Ice Age movies—shows how dialogue, animation, voice casting, timing, storyline, and musical score all work together to produce this wonderful, fresh entertainment piece that will increase in value through the years. A dazzling kaleidoscope of vibrant color and rhythm of motion tie every scene together flawlessly to beguile audiences of all ages to wish deeply that the story will never end. Listen for the singing talents of Jamie Foxx and Will.I.Am  and listen to some outstanding whistling in the song "Fly Love". The voicing for the Blue Macaws as done by Jesse Eisenberg and Anne Hathaway is great. Listen for George Lopez’ voice as the Toucan.

TOOTH FAIRY (Theatrical Release USA 2010)

Ben Meyers’ rating: 4.0|5.0 Starsìììì

Tooth Fairy—cute film, good family watch—has potential for comedy that is not fully realized. Dwayne Johnson seems a little out of his element in this movie, but it still works as he obviously works make the role fit. He manages to pull it off along with Julie Andrews and the supporting cast. Despite the seeming miscast roles, the movie still earns a watch as an easy-on-the-mind, light comedy.

ALIEN (Theatrical Release USA 1979)

 Ben Meyers’ rating: 4.0|5.0 Starsìììì

Alien begins as a 4.8/5.0 star movie until Ian Holm dies. The movie immediately falls into an average status and slowly, piece by piece, falls apart until its original power has lost its ability to produce a good climax. Sigourney Weaver has good potential to work in films. The movie’s concept is good, but by the year 2021 has lost appeal as it, unfortunately, has been overused and seems stale.

OPEN RANGE (Theatrical Release USA 2003)

 Ben Meyers’ rating: 4.3|5.0 Starsìììì

Open Range—WOW! western movie—has a notable western gun battle at the end of the movie. There are scenes in this movie, such as the part where Abraham Benrubi binds up his bedroll while talking to Diego Luna, that are so incredibly natural and real that one believes they are watching a real-life sequence. Kevin Costner and Robert Duvall, great actors, are a pleasure to see in the movie and the late Michael Jeter is a good addition to the cast.

SKI PATROL (Theatrical Release USA 1990)

Ben Meyers’ rating: 3.5|5.0 Starsììì

Ski Patrol—comical film styled for the 'beach party movie' mindset—works on the level of the beach party movies developed for teenagers during the 1960s. This movie uses light romance and comedy tossed together in a straightforward, predictable storyline. Low key, easy-on-the-mind watch has its own place in entertainment. For an adult, this movie stands as it is. It’s a quick time filler and move on to 'new and better things' watch.

PARANORMAN (Theatrical Release USA 2012)

Ben Meyers’ rating: 4.2|5.0 Starsìììì

ParaNorman—animated, action, adventure—has such wonderful stop motion animation that it is difficult to know, at first, that the movie does not rely entirely on computer generation rather than figurines positioned on platforms. The storyline could have been buffed a little to shine a bit higher, but this watch performs as a highly entertaining, creative, and imaginative watch. It’s new and fresh. This film serves as a child/adult share as well as a good family night out movie.

Yes. The movie deserves its watch due to its non-threatening introduction of normally ‘very scary’ characters that have been animated in such a way that the fright factor has been mitigated so that more focus can be placed on solving the situation rather than running away in fear. That factor moves it into a movie that can be enjoyed by all members of a family.

With a story that Edward James Olmos and Lorraine Bracco fill to the brim and overflow with watchability value, the movie easily wins the best script award of the year. RIO GRANDE (Theatrical Release USA 1950)

 Ben Meyers’ rating: 4.1|5.0 Starsìììì

Rio Grande—one of the better films for John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara—surpasses the usual fare of the western genre movie. Due to its skillful weaving of three stories into one, it keeps interest throughout and utilizes well the tension between husband/wife relationships, their relationship to their son, and occupational hazards. Exceptionally well-balanced film that stays on target to its conclusion and delivers classic entertainment for the whole family. Watch for Ken Curtis (from the later television series Gunsmoke) in the Sons of the Pioneers singing group.

Leatherheads—good watch for both sports movie fans and non-sports movie fans—nicely blends enough romance with a good sports story and a good journalism story to please a wider range of audience than most sports movies reach. George Clooney both directs and acts in the movie and does a good job in both roles. The movie title has been chosen well to date the film’s story. The football action is hard to beat. THE EGYPTIAN PYRAMIDS (Released on YouTube USA 2014)

Ben Meyers’ rating: 4.0|5.0 Starsìììì

The Egyptian Pyramids—cute and comical short film—shows talent in both the animation and storyline. The facial expressions can be universally recognized and appreciated. It does not take a plotline read to understand what has happened. Perhaps the most refreshing part of this short film is its earthiness…no sci fi, alien, ‘let’s leave earth and zoom off to Mars’ story presents itself. The predicament, the characterization, relates to Earth and becomes one of those ‘Yep, that’s just how it is with camels’ stories that causes a real-life chuckle. WOW! Great watch! Good timing for its humor. The terrific conclusion marks this short film as a good effort for all involved in its production.

Ed—short film with a good concept—rains gloom and dark despair on the screen from its opening scene to its closing scene. The film is incomprehensible from its beginning to its closing scenes where one finally begins to guess at the reality/non-reality of its storyline.
