SAVING CAPITALISM (Video Release USA 2017)

Ben Meyers’ rating: 4.4|5.0 Starsìììì

Saving Capitalism—
nothing new here—becomes a film without clear vision or motive. The film delivers itself as a pale, water coloring on a subject that requires and deserves heavy oil coloring on a much larger canvas. Dr. Reich’s message states that capitalism is sick, tired, and needs revision. While he tours the United States promoting his ideas, it will take time to truly understand the real thought behind this film and why it has been released at this time.

Yes. This film may be appreciated at a deeper level by perusing the Wikipedia article on Capitalism for a quick refreshment on the subject before viewing the film. It also helps to do research on Dr. Reich to understand his viewpoint in relationship to other minds on this subject.

HICKOK (Video Release USA 2017)

Ben Meyers’ rating: 1.8|5.0 Starsì

Hickok—
Hollywood’s attempt to revive the Western film genre—fails miserably despite an excellent cast that relies on the talents of Luke Hemsworth, Trace Adkins, Bruce Dern, and Kris Kristofferson. Though Luke Hemsworth can play within this genre, his assigned dialogue lines are unrecoverable. Trace Adkins, despite working within the field of western music, does not pull anything out of his assigned scenes. In reviewing all casting choices, Bruce Dern has the strongest presence onscreen.

Wild Bill Hickok’s (Luke Hemsworth) story gets retold once again.

Additional Thanks

Thank You to Director Timothy Woodward, Jr. for directing efforts. Thank you to Executive Producers Benjamin Gerry, Daisy Hamilton, Marcy Levitas Hamilton, Strath Hamilton, Strathford Hamilton, and J.D. Seraphine for making the film possible. Additional characters/cast include: Mrs. Knox (Heather Alexander), Lou-Ann (Kimberly Alexander), Horse Rider (Shane P. Allen), and The Stranger (Terral Altom).

Buy a ticket? Yes? No? Maybe?

No. The movie is a disaster from the get-go. Don’t waste time or money on this film. Try the 1995 Wild Bill instead. Additional good western movies are: The Missing or True Grit (John Wayne version).

JIM AND ANDY: THE GREAT BEYOND—FEATURING A VERY SPECIAL, CONTRACTUALLY OBLIGATED MENTION OF TONY CLIFTON (Netflix Release USA 2017)

Ben Meyers’ rating: 4.8|5.0 Starsìììì

Jim and Andy: The Great Beyond—Featuring a Very Special, Contractually Obligated Mention of Tony Clifton
—easily makes the 'best documentary list' for Ben Meyers International Movie Critics. Jim Carrey, one of the most talented actors of this generation, tells his story personably and well. A rare look at Jim Carrey, inside himself rather than inside another character, takes the audience on a deeply moving story that superbly examines, not only his working techniques, but his childhood and relationship with family. There is an array of behind the scenes footage for 1999’s Man on the Moon movie (about Andy Kaufman) that shows why Jim Carrey stays at the top of his game. Interesting and well formatted, this documentary deserves its kudos and encore all the way.

DEEP (Theatrical Release Spain 2017)

Ben Meyers’ rating: 3.0|5.0 Starsììì

Deep,
animated film originally released in Estonia, quickly runs itself into bland and boring with mixed plotlines and poorly written dialogue lines. The argumentative lines, meant to be comical, fail to be amusing or even rib-tickling. The small storyline encases itself in a copycat production with nothing new added for entertainment value. As an interesting side note, listen for the voice of Dwight Shultz (Howling Mad Murdock on The A-Team television series) as the animated character Kraken.

FINDING NEMO (Theatrical Release USA 2003)

Ben Meyers’ rating: 4.7|5.0 Starsìììì

Finding Nemo—
one of the best Pixar films since 1995’s Toy Story—runs on an outstandingly loving, thoughtful, and imaginative script with some of the best voicing in the entertainment industry. The animation is fabulous even by 2017 standards. The script is flawless. This movie nearly made a billion dollars box office and earns its money in every way.

RATCHET & CLANK (Theatrical Release USA 2016)

Ben Meyers’ rating: 3.3|5.0 Starsììì

Ratchet & Clank,
an animated feature that bases itself on the video game, wants so badly to be an action animation movie. The meager storyline, however, does not justify a movie and despite an all-star voice cast fails at every juncture. If one must see Ratchet and Clank in action, it’s better to get the Play Station game than watch the movie.

A Street Cat Named Bob—

THE COLD LIGHT OF DAY (Theatrical Release USA 2012)

Ben Meyers’ rating: 3.8|5.0 Starsììì

The Cold Light of Day
shows Bruce Willis without the charisma he showed in Die Hard and other action flicks. Henry Cavill, not a good casting choice here, has a difficult time juggling ‘ordinary kid’ with sophistication, almost as if he can’t make up his mind who he is. The script has a decent theme, but the portrayal of that script doesn’t work at any level. The best and strongest portrayal of character award goes to Sigourney Weaver. The film on a whole is a disappointment.

9 (Theatrical Release USA 2009)

Ben Meyers’ rating: 3.1|5.0 Starsììì

9—
fabulous camera work and great cinematography—becomes complicated with a difficult to follow storyline and poorly developed characters. The animation has terrific originality and with proper character development, this movie could have been in an A+ category. An audience may find itself asking, why is this film important throughout the film. On the upside, the voice casting includes some of our best—Christopher Plummer, the late Martin Landau, John C. Reilly, Crispin Glover, Jennifer Connelly, and Elijah Woods.

MY ALL AMERICAN (Theatrical Release USA 2015)

Ben Meyers’ rating: 3.7|5.0 Starsììì

My All American
has all the elements of an extremely sad, but inspiring sports story—someone with tremendous desire to play professional football makes the university team, plays really well against all odds, gets bone cancer, and dies. This story should have blown itself into classic status and completely fails. It ends as just another sports film that, sadly, does not say much when it has a need to say a lot about the value of losing life to serious disease. Aaron Eckhart seems miscast in this film. This may be, in part, to over direction. The movie tries to interpret the character for its audience without allowing the audience the freedom to find itself within the character, to relate to the character. It is good to see Freddie Steinmark, the hero of this film, has no plans of backing down despite his disability; but the inspiration of ‘fighter to the end’ is unfortunately not realized as this story is portrayed.
