UNITED PASSIONS (Theatrical Release USA 2014)

Ben Meyers’ rating: 3.9|5.0 Starsììì

United Passions
—confusing movie that does not seem to have an established focus—has little to no character development, no continuity, and no purpose in its presentation. If the writers had established more background, the audience could have left the film with higher appreciation of FIFA’s (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) value to football. An audience expects more from Sam Neill than he delivers and comes away surprised at how Tim Roth, at times, seems to ‘take the bull by the horns’ in his assigned lines.

ADIDAS VS PUMA: THE BROTHER’S FEUD (Television Release Germany 2016)

Ben Meyers’ rating: 4.8|5.0 Starsìììì

Adidas Vs Puma: The Brother’s Feud
—good example of the best of the best in bio flicks—has it all, character development, storyline, and great acting. The audience easily finds itself drawn into the movie as the brothers’ story unfolds. The film gradually flows into answers to the question of why two brothers would fight. Actors Ken Duken and Torben Liebreckt perform their parts excellently with very good body language that signals and accents dialogue. This bio flick easily becomes a WOW! BRAVO! BRAVO! film. Great work for Director Oliver Dommenget. This movie catches the human element well and serves on a solid plate of realism that does not minimize drama. The movie uses mostly German with some English thrown in when needed for storyline purposes. It has great English subtitles.

FOR PETE’S SAKE (Theatrical Release USA 1974)

Ben Meyers’ rating: 4.2|5.0 Starsìììì

For Pete’s Sake
—edgy adult theme—serves Barbra Streisand well as a venue to show her acting skill. But, like Moonstruck with Cher, the film runs on a sexual pattern that does not serve whole family entertainment needs. The overall story is as well-written as the Out of Towners and has that same sophisticated comedic feel. Casting Department envisioned Barbra Streisand with Michael Sarrazin, a great choice to get the charisma necessary to pull the story from a run-of-the-mill 3-star flick into 4.0 status. For Director Peter Yates the movie presents itself at a higher level than some of his other works such as The Deep.

Additional Thanks

Thank you to Director Peter Yates for directing effort. Thank you to Executive Producer Phil Feldman for making the film possible. Additional characters/cast include: Henry (Barbra Streisand), Pete (Michael Sarrazin), Helen (Estelle Parsons), Mrs. Cherry (Molly Picon), Fred (William Redfield), Nick (Louis Zorich), Judge Hiller (Heywood Hale Broun), Bernie (Richard Ward), Angelo (ed Bakey), and Dominic (Peter Mamakos).

Buy a ticket? Yes? No? Maybe?

Yes. The story serves as a simple, afternoon-fill-in-some-time movie better watched as streaming media than taking the time and monetary investment to go to theater. This film does not have the quality necessary to be a ‘couples date night movie’ and does not require total involvement of time or intellect.

THE GIRL WITH ALL THE GIFTS (Theatrical Release Canada 2016)

Ben Meyers’ rating: 4.2|5.0 Starsìììì

The Girl With All the Gifts
—not just another Zombie-like movie—serves up gore and brutality, some of it offscreen, in a 275-degree turn as these fungus-infected humans are more sentient, more human-like, and have unique survival needs. The storyline is good and uses a young girl to work through its story rather than the defensive adult male endeavoring to survive in a changed world. Zombie fans as well as non-zombie fans may appreciate this movie’s fresh twist on an old story. It is worth a watch.

BECOMING CARY GRANT (Cannes Film Festival, Cannes ,France 2017)

Ben Meyers’ rating: 4.4|5.0 Starsìììì

Becoming Cary Grant,
when one is born Archibald Alec Leach, is a documentary that easily earns its watch. The documentary delves shallowly into Grant’s early family life and focuses more on his marital relationships, his mental conditions, and his professional career. The documentary has a somber tone shadowed with a little darkness that does not seem to support the Cary Grant who audiences know onscreen. But, it is precisely that mixture that makes the film worth a watch. Great work for Director Mark Kidel. This light documentary can easily be watched while accomplishing other tasks.

TEA PETS * (Theatrical Release China 2017)

Ben Meyers’ rating: 2.6|5.0 Starsìì

Tea Pets
does not flow well due to its tendency to randomly jump from one group of scenes to another group of scenes without good transitioning. The character development takes the length of the film rather than a good definition within the first few minutes of the film and it loses its ability to connect to its audience. Overall the story is difficult to follow and it does not connect enough heart into its storyline to make it cross international borders well.

Additional Thanks

Thank you to Director Gary Wang for directing effort. Thank you to Producers Zhou Yu and Ye Yuan for making the film possible. Additional characters/cast include: Xiao Xiang (Guanlin Ji) and Nathan (voice of Jason Kesser).

Buy a ticket? Yes? No? Maybe?

No. The film script needs a re-write for flow and transitioning. If one does decide to watch this movie, do some research on tea pets and how they fit into Chinese culture. This will enhance appreciation for the cultural history behind the use of tea pets and the usefulness of tea pets. A better watch for stories involving figurines (toys) for the United States audience will be Toy Story.

JARHEAD 2: FIELD OF FIRE (Blu-ray/DVD Release USA 2014)

Ben Meyers’ rating: 3.9|5.0 Starsììì

Jarhead 2: Field of Fire
—more entertainment value than its prequel Jarhead—serves as an example of a sequel film that surpasses the prequel in quality. The storyline has increased depth and unification of thought so that it is easily followed. Even though the movie does not rely on well-known actors, the actors do a fine job of portraying on the ground fighting. The movie earns its watch as a believable, realistic war story that increases respect for fighters sent to accomplish the impossible mission.

TWISTER (Theatrical Release USA 1996)

Ben Meyers’ rating: 3.8|5.0 Starsììì

Twister
—cult classic; fun, straight forward story—has its flaws, but the action and suspense work to override much of the difficulty in the movie’s story. While it’s rather tiring to once again see the traumatized childhood event driving adult choice of occupation, the idea is not driven into the ground to unbearableness. While this film is not Oscar Award winning, by any means, it’s interesting to see a storm movie presentation that works so well on several levels.

THE VAST OF NIGHT (Video Release USA 2019)

Ben Meyers’ rating: 4.4|5.0 Starsìììì

The Vast of Night
returns viewers to an era when dialogue has been so well rehearsed that actors can perform multiple tasks while delivering their lines. This movie uses an old storyline, alien abduction of humans, and it is not perfect, but is almost there. It completely captures the 1950s era with WOW for nostalgia by using terrific props and some of the best work in cinematography. It’s simple, human, and easily absorbed entertainment with a welcome low-key entertainment presentation.

FUN WITH DICK AND JANE (Theatrical Release USA 1977)

Ben Meyers’ rating: 4.3|5.0 Starsìììì

Fun With Dick and Jane
, fun idea for a story, has comically relatable scenes that use the acting skills of George Segal and Jane Fonda to portray the story. There is a 2005 remake of this movie that uses Jim Carrey and Tea Leoni for the parts of Dick and Jane. This 1977 version is well done and moves the story along well. It is an above average, clean piece of comedy entertainment. Good work for all involved.

THE JUNGLE BOOK (Theatrical Release USA 1942)

Ben Meyers’ rating: 3.8|5.0 Starsììì

The Jungle Book
—first theatrical release of the classic Rudyard Kipling story—has a great concept, is watchable, and seems better than the 2016 The Jungle Book movie. Despite its datedness, it charms because of its innocent presentation, its simpleness, and kind approach to its storyline—something which seems largely lost in turn of the century entertainment presentations. While the acting could be improved for a bit more realism and the portrayal might need some tuning, the story works and still earns a place in the family home video library.

The Out-of-Towners
—comically explores the perils of professional men changing positions toward the end of their careers—supports itself on a surprisingly good teaming of Steve Martin and Goldie Hawn. The team weight seems perfectly distributed to maximize comedy. While the movie can be best appreciated by the maturing professional set, the great storyline and well-written script superlatively catch the dilemmas of naivety in a large, sophisticated American metropolitan area. This movie easily earns its time and money investment.
