ENCOUNTER (Other Worlds Film Festival Austin Texas USA 2018)

amateur, unrelatable, irrelevant—does not earn a watch despite Luke Hemsworth’s presence in the movie.

THE GREEN HORNET (Theatrical Release USA 2011)

Ben Meyers’ rating: 3.8|5.0 Starsììì

The Green Hornet
needs better presentation. Seth Rogen does not seem to catch The Green Hornet’s personality well as if cast out of character. The film seems a bit rash and too bombastic as compared to the television series.

THE LIFT BOY (Internet Release USA 2020)

Ben Meyers’ rating: 4.6|5.0 Starsìììì

The Lift Boy
crosses USA entertainment borders well with its relatable, coming of age story. It’s light, easy on the mind, and relevant to the human experience. The camera work is good and scenery for staging the story excellent. The movie almost attains re-watchable status due to the way the story unfolds and the introduction of significant characters a little later in the story. The film has been rated TV-MA which seems a little harsh. It could have easily been rated TV-PG or TV-14. Good work for Director Jonathan Augustin.

MR. DEEDS (Theatrical Release USA 2002)

Ben Meyers’ rating: 4.4|5.0 Starsìììì

Mr. Deeds
becomes a pleasure to watch because of the way it depicts small town life and how a small-town person maintains humanity when introduced to a life quite outside their normal sphere of operation. It is another Adam Sandler, done well. The movie definitely earns its stars for a parent watch.

THE WILLOUGHBYS (Television Release USA 2020)

Ben Meyers’ rating: 3.6|5.0 Starsììì

The Willoughbys
leaves out some critical thinking processes necessary for the storyline to work. It is out of context with reality and seems pointless. These parents are so uninvolved with their children that the children could not have survived. A professional script re-write needs to happen for plotline gaps and holes and to establish logical detailing to flesh out the story. The movie does not earn its investment of time or money.

The Willoughby children decide raising themselves would be preferable to being raised by their parents.

Gilbert, Richard McConnell, Justin Ottley, Kris Pearn, and Steven Thibault for making the film possible. Additional characters/cast include: Tim (Voice of Will Forte), Nanny (Voice of Maya Rudolph), Jane (Voice of Alessia Cara), Commander (Voice of Terry Crews), Father (Voice of Martin Short), Mother (Voice of Jane Krakowski), Barnaby A and B (Voice of Seán Cullen), The Cat (Voice of Rickey Gervais), Baby Ruth/Phil/Yokel (Voice of Brian Drummond), Spoons McGee (Voice of Kris Pearn), Travel Agent (Voice of Fiona Toth), and Taxi Driver/Various Guides/The Perfect Dad/Hippie (Voice of Michael Dobson).

Buy a ticket? Yes? No? Maybe?

No. There are more logical and enjoyable animated movies that depict uninvolved parenting (like The Lorax) which offer better entertainment value. The Lorax has re-watchable status because the basic script story sustains itself. But, The Willoughbys does not establish relevancy nor audience interest in the children’s plight.

SOUL SURFER (Theatrical Release USA 2011)

Ben Meyers’ rating: 3.7|5.0 Starsììì

Soul Surfer
—based on a true story—does not realize its full potential. The scenes seem to fail to catch the emotion involved in this traumatic life event and seem, at times, a little cold. It seems that the best scenes are the surfing scenes rather than the event and how it impacted the girl and the real force that enabled her to make a comeback. The trip to Thailand seems disconnected to the story at large. It seems there is another story to be told that has been suppressed.

The Deep,
not a new idea, but if one hasn’t seen a movie for a while on diving for lost treasure in the ocean, this film works to entertain. The characters are relatable, the portrayal of story good. The movie works as a fair to middling action flick while eating lunch.

OPEN SEASON: SCARED SILLY * (DVD/Blu-Ray Release USA 2016)

Ben Meyers’ rating: 3.0|5.0 Starsììì

Open Season: Scared Silly
—run-of-the-mill—comes off as a wannabe quick money-maker relying on the series’ reputation. If one is looking for a nostalgic repeat of the series, one will not find it in this film as the movie fails to establish the original story’s feel and format. The movie fails to entertain and quickly establishes a boring and rather pointless piece of entertainment. The characters in the story fail to make the critical connection to the audience.

BON VOYAGE, CHARLIE BROWN (AND DON’T COME BACK!!) (Theatrical Release USA 1980)

Ben Meyers’ rating: 4.3|5.0 Starsìììì

Bon Voyage, Charlie Brown (and Don’t Come Back!!)—
cute and child friendly—gives a nostalgic trip for adults and provides nicely done, quiet entertainment for children. The film is simple, heartful, and meaningful. It shows, in a very nice way, how young children may think and interact with each other. This is classic B grade film-ware that moves into a 4.3/5.0 story for its simplicity and easy viewing. Not too loud, brash, overly complicated, or lacking in heart, this film easily earns a place in the family home video collection due to its engaging presentation and gentle reminder of the more important things in life.

DENNIS THE MENACE (Theatrical Release USA 1993)

Ben Meyers’ rating: 4.2|5.0 Starsìììì

Dennis the Menace
follows the cartoon strip story well and pleasantly surprises its audience with a simple, delightful story that has heart, love, and cleanness written into its very core. This is a perfect addition to the family home video collection that will stand the test of time in entertainment value. Walter Matthau is perfectly cast as the character Mr. Wilson while Mason Gamble could not have improved on his rendition of Dennis. The supporting cast shines. The story house, garden, and sidewalk scenes are perfect at every level.

THE LORAX (Theatrical Release USA 2012)

Ben Meyers’ rating: 4.6|5.0 Starsìììì

The Lorax
—WOW!—hits all the right buttons. It IS an environmental message film, but it presents its message in such a pleasing manner that its entertainment value remains intact. The movie actually enhances the original Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax children’s story and serves as a fine example of turning a few pages of story into a terrific full-length animated movie that has entertainment value for the child and the adult. The quality of animation, the pacing of story, the unique coloration of scenes are beyond criticism. It absolutely belongs in the family home video collection. It’s solid and doesn’t fool its audience with a great trailer without delivering on that trailer. The movie adds a tall feather to Illumination Studio’s collection of films and has been added to the Ben Meyers International Movie Critics favorite film list. This movie, as did Zootopia, Ernest and Celestine, and The Nut Job establishes its unique, memorable voice and presentation, two things that make the difference between a classic film that will stand the test of time and multiple watches that will continue to entertain. The film has heart and can easily cross the international cultural divide to establish worth across many countries. Kudos to the team that established its vision well.

BATTLE: LOS ANGELES (Theatrical Release USA 2011)

Ben Meyers’ rating: 3.7|5.0 Starsììì

Battle Los Angeles
struggles deeply with character development, a difficult to follow storyline, and establishing rapport with its audience. After viewing the film, the only character one seems to remember is Hector who is played by Bryce Cass. This movie seems ‘rushed’ as if hurrying to complete itself. The technique of news blurbs that tell the story before viewing ruins the prize component of good story telling, audience anticipation building due to the uncertainty of how the scenes will unfold. One may feel like—where did that guy come from…do I know this guy…he just seems to drop out of the sky and die. One wants to care, but the next scene is there with no time to remove oneself from the previous scene. Transitions are poor for good audience tracking.
