Inside Llewyn Davis—another Joel and Ethan Coen classic—becomes one of their best films since O’Brother Where Art Thou (2000), No Country for Old Men (2007) and the True Grit (2010) remake. The film is well acted with some unforgettable scenes.

Storyline

Folk musician Llewyn Davis (Oscar Isaac) searches for his place in the musical entertainment world.  Caught in the hump of poverty, it seems that everything Llewyn Davis touches goes wrong. Finally, after unreal hardship randomly alleviated by a handful of willing and unwilling friends and a sister who wants him to get a ‘real’ job, Llewyn decides to ‘throw in the towel,’ get a real job, and settle into a conventional life. Even that decision goes horridly awry almost as if an unseen force has determined that Llewyn will fulfill his life doing what he loves to do, but with randomly placed meals, no love, no home, and no pay.

Storyline

The Minions’ sole desire is to work for a villain master. They usually make mistakes, however, that eliminate their chosen villain. After a serious mistake with the villain Napoleon, they hide out in a cave while becoming increasingly depressed due to the lack of a villain master. Finally, three Minions leave the cave to find a new arch villain.

Contact imagines earth’s first contact with alien life forms via the Arecibo Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence program, the New Mexico Very Large Array program, the Vega star system, and earth’s astronomers. It’s a large deviation from the Hollywood action movies that depict first contact as a struggle against alien domination with the resultant mayhem, bloodshed, and war (see Independence Day, War of the Worlds, Battle: Los Angeles). Contact, an original Carl Sagan movie concept, revolves around Astronomer Eleanor ‘Ellie’ Arroway’s (Jodie Foster) life challenges before being the first person to discover decipherable incoming messages from the Vega star system. Ellie encounters serious challenges to her work in the form of withdrawal of funding, withdrawal of credibility support, greedy usurpation of her ability to speak about her findings, denigration of her status as a free thinker, and promotion of others ahead of her to travel into deep space to solve the mystery of the source of the messages. But, as in real life, small breaks come when all seems lost. In this case, she receives a new post at New Mexico’s satellite array; a billion-dollar engineer, S. R. Hadden (John Hurt), funds her work and tells her about a Japanese launch capsule that will transport her to Vega. There is an interesting scene where Ellie is transported to a previously imagined Florida beach and is approached by a materialized form that looks like her dad who tells her that this is first contact as if promising there will be much more to come. When she arrives back on earth, high level officials show her video footage that seems to support that she never left earth and her story becomes entirely discredited. The movie ends with a White House cover up.

Casting creates a charismatic symphony with Tom Cruise, Jamie Foxx, and Jada Pinkett Smith in lead roles. Collateral provides a great thrill ride.

AMERICAN GRAFFITI (Theatrical Release USA 1973)

America Graffiti surprises and delights. Do not expect a high school musical with lots of sexual references and nudity. Expect, instead, a perfectly rated PG movie that produces good, clean entertainment that is worth every one of its 112 minutes. It’s a George Lucas film that has been rated as historically significant and placed into the National Film Registry. The film covers the time span of one evening by detailing the 1960s practice of cruising, picking up girls, eating at drive-in restaurants, street racing, and ‘making out’ in out-of-the-way places. Two of the high school graduates, Curt (Richard Dreyfuss) and his friend Steve (Ron Howard) waiver on their decision to go to college. A hot rodder, Bob Falfa (Harrison Ford), flips his car in a racing car accident and future plans are changed and solidified for everyone involved.

CHEF (Montclair Film Festival, Montclair New Jersey USA 2014)

Chef, a very good movie from Director Jon Favreau (who gained significant presence with Cowboys and Aliens), scores because of its originality. The film portrays the life of a chef working for others and the difference a change makes as he enters the entrepreneurial world of the ‘on-the-street cooking wagon.’  Chef Carl Casper (Jon Favreau) overpowers the other actors in the first 10 to 15 minutes of the film due to his strong film presence, but the rest of the film works as the viewer settles into the story. The movie comfortably interweaves a secondary theme of family conflict into its primary story while giving a hefty understanding of how social media can work for you or against you. Chef Carl Casper receives a poor review from a restaurant critic. After reading the critic’s tweet, he responds publicly to the tweet and writes that he will prove he is a great chef and challenges the critic to come back and try a new menu. Chef Carl Casper develops a new menu, the release of which is short-circuited by the owner of the restaurant. Unable to redeem himself, Chef Carl Casper ends in the position of publicly and verbally assaulting the restaurant critic. The situation goes viral on the Internet and Chef Carl officially loses his job. He travels to Miami with his ex-wife Inez (Sofia Vergara) and begins a new life by buying a food truck. His Internet reputation follows him, however, and he finds himself inundated with customers interested in the final proof that he is indeed a great chef. The story winds down to a satisfactory conclusion. The film is a good family watch.

The ‘Burbs teams Bruce Dern with Tom Hanks, Rick Ducommun, and Carrie Fisher to produce a comical portrayal of  old neighbors versus newcomers. The movie starts well and paces itself to a surprise conclusion. It’s a fair to middling comedy—clean, a nice Sunday afternoon family entertainment piece.

Trail of the Panda—suitable to okay—works slowly and drags at times through its hour and a half of showtime. However, the story bases itself on a real set of events and even allows the treat at its conclusion about what happens to the boy when he reaches adulthood. The movie shows some outstanding scenery of panda bear environments and gives a view into how this boy began to heal from his parents' death.

Storyline

A guide and a Research Scout try to find a panda cub for the researcher to purchase, but are foiled due to inclement weather. The guide's young adoptee finds a small, injured cub, nurses it to health and in that nurturing finds his own path to recovery.

NEED FOR SPEED ( Released to Theaters in the USA 2014)

Need for Speed feels like Smokey and the Bandit updated with some class and deeply re-coated in Jeremy Clarkson’s previous Top Gear United Kingdom television series. If you love getting acquainted with upper class automobiles, get ready for a real treat. You’re going to see the Koenigsegg Agera R (three of them), Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren, Lamborghini Sesto Elemento, GTA Spano, McLaren P1, Saleen S7, Bugatti Veyron, and a Ford Shelby Mustang along with some terrific racing scenes a la Hollywood style. The film even comes with a moral: Bad guys get caught; good guys are good guys and will win in the long run. Terrific scenes featuring the best views of some of the world’s top performance automobiles, make this film soar. The film has a PG-13 rating and serves up a surprisingly and refreshingly clean script...perhaps because everything moves so fast there’s no time for anything else.

Storyline

A neighborhood garage serves as a place where young car geeks modify old muscle cars for street racing. Tobey Marshall (Aaron Paul), the owner of the garage, receives an invite to race one of three Koenigsegg Agera Rs with his friend Little Pete (Harrison Gilbertson) and a competitor, Dino Brewster (Dominic Cooper). Foul play by Dino Brewster kills Little Pete, but Tobey Marshall gets the rap and serves prison time. The rest of the story becomes a race to get even.

My Dog Skip—classic, low budget film—shows the early talents of Frankie Muniz as well as the established talents of Kevin Bacon, Luke Wilson and Diane Lane.  Despite its presentation, the story is heartfelt, enchanting, and well played by all actors. This becomes a good family watch.

In World War II Mississippi, a wise mother, Ellen Morris (Diane Lane), acts against advice and presents her nine-year-old son, Willie Morris (Frankie Muniz), with a brand new puppy to offset the loss of an older friend, Dink Jenkins (Luke Wilson) who goes to war. Willie Morris discovers four legs can be better than two when it comes to establishing long-term friendships.

Big Hero 6 becomes another defining point in Disney’s computer animation department and stands as a mini-masterpiece of animation and storytelling. The story radiates one good set of values after another based on forgiveness and justice, love for family, and the importance of education in finding one’s way in life.

Storyline

Fourteen-year-old Hiro Hamada (voice of Ryan Potter) lives in San Fransokyo. Hiro builds robots for illegal robot wrestling games. One of his robots takes the city’s best robot down, completely dismembering it. But, his older brother, Tadoshi Hamada (voice of Daniel Henney), has a better plan for Hiro’s future and takes Hiro to his college laboratory to show Hiro a healthcare robot he has created. Hiro receives an invitation to attend college by legendary robot inventor Robert Callaghan, (voice of James Cromwell). Hiro is enthusiastic about the offer and wants to attend. All he has to do, to attend college, is make a robot for the upcoming robot convention that significantly shows his ability in robotics. Hiro invents Microbots and ‘wows’ the judges; but after the successful presentation of Microbots, the convention hall catches fire. Hiro’s brother attempts to save Professor Robert Callaghan, but tragically loses his life in the fire. Later Hiro sits in his room wondering what to do next when Baymax (voice of Scott Adsit), his brother’s healthcare robot, comes to life to assist Hiro after he has stubbed his toe. One of Hiro’s Microbots begins movement and Hiro thinks it is broken. But Baymax takes the Petri dish that Microbot is in and follows it with Hiro in hot pursuit. The journey stops at an old abandoned warehouse. They find that Hiro’s Microbots, supposedly lost in the convention hall fire, are being mass produced in the warehouse. The Microbots rise up and try to take out Hiro and BayMax. They both flee for their lives and the story is on.

Storyline

 Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) is the established victor of the games, but still visits and hunts with her old friend, Gale (Liam Hemsworth). Katniss’ mother (Paula Malcomson) continues to be nervously upset even though she has a better place to live and enough food. Katniss’ younger sister, Primrose Everdeen (Willow Shield), starts to take the lead in caring for their mother as Katniss attends all the political events while reluctantly acting as if everything is okay to the Districts although desperately desiring to revolt against the system. President Snow (Donald Sutherland) sees Katniss as a red-hot ember in the middle of dry tinder for a political revolt and at the 75th Hunger Game changes the rules. Former Hunger Game victors from each district are to fight in the next game which pits Katniss against professional players where odds will not be as favorable for her.

LIFE OF PI (New York Film Festival New York City New York USA 2014)

Life of Pi—a work of art—classifies itself as one of the best films of 2014. It’s fresh, real, and, not only entertains, but creates a little mental activity, too.  It has a ‘moral of the story’ feel that is not over the top: namely, life is a little sweet and little sour, but over the long run, life is great.

Storyline

The tale revolves around Pi Patel and his life from 5 years old (acted by Gautam Belur), to 11-12 years old (acted by Ayush Tandon), to a teenager (acted by Suraj Sharma), to an adult (acted by Irrfan Khan). Pi, an Indian boy of adventure and a risk-taking examiner of all things, finds himself in a state of change when his father Santosh Patel (Adil Hussain) decides to sell the family zoo in India and move his family to America for a fresh start. The family boards a ship with some of the zoo animals they plan to sell in America. On the way to America, their ship is hit by a huge wave. The ship sinks and the only survivors are the boy Pi and four of the zoo animals—a zebra, an orangutan, a hyena, and a tiger—on a lifeboat. An interesting lesson follows as Pi endeavors to survive in a world reduced to the eaters and those to be eaten.
