FOCUS CHINA Volume 5

About the cover photo

While Beijing integrates very ancient architecture with the new, Shanghai's skyline focuses more on the ultra-modern. Located south of Beijing, Shanghai connects to Beijing via high speed bullet train that includes full service dining as well as private sleeping cars. The train makes the trip between the two cities in approximately 8 hours.

Editorial

As we've moved through the birth of cinema in Germany to Australia to France to Russia, we've learned that cinema has been almost a simultaneous release and growth throughout European and southern hemisphere countries. That trend continues into China as it receives the Lumiere Brothers' camera in 1896. It is not long after that date that small theaters become a part of both the landscape and pastime of the people. A Chinese opera, Dingjun Mountain, releases in 1905 and the industry is up and running. We welcome you to this issue of Ben Meyers International Entertainment Magazine Focus China as we examine China's contribution to the world of entertainment.

Broadening and Expanding Focus, Those Intriguing Entrepreneurs and Experimenters

by Ben Meyers

In 1896 one of the Lumiere Brothers, Louis Lumiere, requests his cameraman take the Cinematographe motion picture camera into China via Shanghai, the largest city in China. That same year Shanghai populations view a smal lsample of what the camera can do and by 1905  they are watching a famous Chinese opera, Dingjun Mountain, on film. The  beginning of the industry is not much different than that of the rest of Europe. Short, black and white, silent comedies entertain audiences before the longer drama films take hold of the industry.

How Chinese Stars Were Born, Then and Now

China already had a thriving theatre industry. It was natural for theater actors to move to this new form of entertainment.
