A PICTORIAL FOCUS
About the cover photo:
The Statue of Liberty against the New York city skyline. This statue has become a symbol of United States' attitude about refugees seeking asylum from civil unrest in home countries. The motto associated with this statue is: "Give me your tired, your poor/Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free."

Welcome to Ben Meyers International Entertainment Magazine Sixth Volume with a focus on United States' Entertainment Industry.
The vast landscape, indigenous people, and deep reliance on cattle ranches drive much of United States' film themes. The United States' unique geological location as a large northern landmass, its relationship to the United Kingdom, and the original European populations who settled the United States also contribute and form its creative relationship with the entertainment industry. The United States is a youthful country when counted from the first influx of immigrants from Europe. Its lack of age-maturity also hugely influences its creative output. While it hosts hundreds of film festivals throughout the country, this issue chooses to focus on Sundance International Film Festival (SIFF) and SXSW Film Festival (SXSW) due to their income producing ability, attraction of larger international audiences, and a significant interest in the future of entertainment. Ben Meyers International Entertainment Magazine welcomes you to the sixth pictorial focus of its evolving magazine.

Broadening and Expanding Focus, Those 'Abundant' Inventors and Experimenters
by Ben Meyers
From collegiate film studies I integrated an understanding that the beginning of the European film industry has been deeply driven by France and French inventors of moving picture equipment. I was surprised to find in the first volume of this magazine that other countries, such as Germany, had arrived at the almost simultaneous release of various motion picture machines within their own countries. But, with research on Australia I was thrown back into France and the invention of the Lumiere Brothers' Cinematographe with its ability to project images on a screen for many people to see as well as be portable and easily moved to other venues. I also saw that while other inventions were often kept within the borders of their countries of origin, the Lumiere Brothers were traveling to other countries and educating them about this new invention. They were also ensuring the rich and the poor had access to this wonder. In 1896 they visited Australia to demonstrate their invention. An Australian theatre actor continued to work with the Cinematographe for 4 years in South Australia.
However, their sales efforts were not as successful in the United States because inventors such as Thomas Edison in 1894 had already introduced the kinetoscope to the country and it had been shown at an exhibition in New York. Soon, studios began rising to produce silent film entertainment on the East coast, but Edison's iron fist policy of maintaining control while demanding money, forced the affected studios to make the momentous decision to move from the east coast to the west coast for freedom. Eventually, this gave birth to Hollywood and the rise of some studios to power.
Two events strengthened United States west coast international entertainment status: 1) World War 1 caused a devastating blow to European film competition and 2) the Spanish Influenza, while quickly contained in Los Angeles, was not as quickly contained in Europe due to slow response time which allowed this flu to set back Europe's film industry.
When United States integrated sound and music into film, that established international dominance with movies related to technology such as could be seen and heard (like The Jazz Singer (1927)).
How United States Stars Were Born
United States Stars, Then and Now
As entertainment began to move toward moving pictures, the United States began to experience its first moving picture 'stars'. Four popular stars were Harold Lloyd, Laurel and Hardy, and Mary Pickford.
While nearly every large and small city in the United States sports some type of film festival, we will focus on two festivals that channel the most income and draw the largest international audiences
The Sundance Film Festival
Salt Lake City and nearby Park City, Utah
January
The Sundance Film Festival hosts independent film makers, documentary films, international films, short films, and feature length films. It proved to be a large 'break through' festival and launched new talent such as Quentin Tarantino, Robert Rodriguez, and Steven Soderbergh into the entertainment industry.
Austin, Texas
Mid-March
SXSW Film Festival Award
The SXSW Film Festival serves as both a music festival and film festival. It hosts notable speakers from the film industry who lecture, mentor, and conduct workshops. The film festival is notable for empowering independent film, new directors...while comedic movies are given an opportunity to measure their ability to generate audience laughter. It also empowers new camera talent, documentary film, feature length and short films, and television proposals.
CUISINE
When talking about United States cuisine, this country, because it is a 'melting pot' of many peoples from many cultures takes its food choices from many countries. Americans work long hours, they do not usually waste time on formal, sit-down meals except on special occasions. They have, therefore, developed preference for foods that combine essential nutritional elements so that eating a meal becomes quick and easy. Some of these food choices include hamburgers which include bread, meat, cheese, and elements of a salad...onion, lettuce, tomato.
Burritos contain the same basic elements except the meat is loosely cooked and spiced and the taco shell replaces the bread.
Pizza
Hot Dogs
Breakfast often relies on cold cereals:
Americans often prefer eating the more formal meal at restaurants because both the man and woman work at positions that allow little time for making preparation for more serious dining in the home. These are foods that may be chosen for those times.
FORD TRUCK
NATIVE CRAFTS
Navajo Crafts
UNITED STATES GLASSWARE
Because the United States is made of a mixed multitude of nations, it shows in their horses, dogs, and farm animals as immigrants brought preferred breeds from around the world into their new homeland. A few horse breeds do originate in the United States such as the Justin Morgan and the Tennessee Walker. Draft horses like Scotland's Clydesdale were imported in the mid-1800s.
Hereford cattle were imported from Britain.
