GERONIMO: AN AMERICAN LEGEND (Released to Theaters USA 1993)

Ben Meyers’ rating: 4.5|5.0 Stars ìììì

Geronimo: An American Legend
succeeds beautifully in its attempt to tell Geronimo’s side of the American/Native American story. It drives the point that Geronimo has a mission in life to preserve his people and that he successfully accomplishes that mission.

GETTYSBURG (Released to Theaters USA 1993)

Ben Meyers’ Rating: 3.7|5.0 Starsììì

Gettysburg provides some detail about a turning point in the American 1860s Civil War. The background scenery is outstanding. The movie shows calmness and professionalism of battle leaders as they plan next war decisions. While it is not the WOW! presentation, overall it is a suitable watch. Plan time to engage this movie as its length runs over four hours of watch time. The battles are the best part of the film.

Maybe. Know that the movie requires time to watch. The Battle of Gettysburg receives a sparse and superficial representation in this movie.

SISTER ACT 2: BACK IN THE HABIT (Released to Theaters USA 1993)

Ben Meyers’ Rating: 4.2|5.0 Starsìììì

Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit takes a little of this and a little of that to make a 'kind of' creative movie that ends on a high note of positivity. Watch through the concluding credit roll for a nicely done song and dance routine. Whoopi Goldberg performs at her usual level of professionalism. It's interesting to see James Coburn cast in this movie. This is one of his later performances. The script is really well written and allows very good presentation and portrayal. There are suggestive scenes in the introductory scenes of the film. But the movie works as an easy-on-the-mind entertainment piece.

THE BEVERLY HILLBILLIES (Released to Theaters USA 1993)

Ben Meyers’ Rating: 4.0|5.0 Starsìììì

The Beverly Hillbillies—has its own interpretation of the original Beverly Hillbillies television series and its own upgraded comedy. It’s pleasant to hear the movie concluding with Jerry Scoggins singing the Hillbillies theme song the Ballad of Jed Clampett, accompanied by Lester Flatt and substitution of Bèla Fleck for Lester Flatt. Watch for an almost unrecognizable Jim Varney as the elderly Clampett.

? Yes? No? Maybe?

Yes. This interpretation of the Beverly Hillbillies television show has its moments of comedy and really tries to earn its watch. It has upgraded its storyline to fit more modern times than the original series. It’s a light afternoon watch that takes little emotional or intellectual involvement.

EL MARIACHI (Theatrical Release USA 1993)

Ben Meyers’ Rating: 4.4|5.0 Starsìììì

El Mariachi—WOW! What a surprise!—skillfully weaves its simple story into a masterfully entertaining watch. Nothing new here and yet everything is new. The word, finesse, comes to mind. One comes away asking how did this movie get passed over? Maybe the poster did not inspire with its splash of font style and unpresuming imagery. The movie has an incredibly small budget, small cast, and then pulls a very respectable box office take. It’s a mafia-style movie that presents itself in an almost Disney-style blanket of innocence. It’s a small piece of refreshment that deserves its watch. It tells its story in a manner reminiscent of Duel. Carlos Gallardo serves as the perfect choice for the mariachi. The movie presents itself in Spanish, but has great subtitles. Be aware that the movie does have several scenes that introduce concepts not suitable for children.

Yes. This neo-western international film is believable right down to the cowboy boots skidding on the sidewalk. Comical, witty, and south of the border entertaining, this is the first film of three films in a Mexican trilogy. The next film is Desperado and the final film is Once Upon a Time in Mexico.

AMOS & ANDREW (Theatrical Release USA 1993)

Ben Meyers’ Rating: 4.2|5.0 Starsìììì

Amos & Andrew—good, campy, action comedy—has a unique flavor that adds to its watchability. It’s a tongue-in-cheek, sweet, light look at a series of social issues that still exist today albeit in a slightly different framework. The film is both entertaining and a welcome relief to the real scenario. WOW! It’s a nice return to times when stereotypes could still be examined within a comedic setting. The movie provides a series of unexpected turns that delightfully surprise and eventually lead to a completely unexpected conclusion. Watch the solid performances by Nicolas Cage and Samuel L. Jackson and the very good support casting of Dabney Coleman and Michael Lerner.

THE FUGITIVE (Theatrical Release USA 1993)

 Ben Meyers’ Rating: 4.3|5.0 Starsìììì

The Fugitive—all around good watch—has been so well written that it becomes a classic example of how to build a ‘man on the run’ story. The film is intense and involves the audience’s emotion to the point that desire builds throughout the movie for the main character to survive and have a good outcome. Part of that is due to the wise choice to cast Harrison Ford against Tommy Lee Jones. Watch for  Joe Pantoliano, one of those rare actors who can play any part well, in this film. This movie becomes the prequel that leads to U.S. Marshals.

DETONATOR (Theatrical Release USA 1993)

 Ben Meyers’ Rating: 3.8|5.0 Starsììì

Detonator—poor script—needs improvement due to the script writing. However, the movie is a perfect example of the director and actors making the best of a script that is not high quality. They show true craftsmanship as they work with what has been given and make it shine the best they can. Pierce Brosnan, Patrick Stewart. Alexandra Paul, Ted Levine, and Christopher Lee produce a solid 3.8|5.0 Star film that stands a little above most 3.8 rated films. Know that the film still makes a fair watch.
