Delhi Safari has got good music, but most of us don’t go to a movie to listen to music. This movie is a message movie that sends a series of mixed messages that are difficult to interpret. Scenes where the monkey tries to kill the parrot when in the previous scenes there was singing about having courage so that the parrot would lead the small band of animals to Delhi to stop new development construction seems convoluted. The animation is subpar although the use of big names for voicing such as Cary Elwes, Christopher Lloyd, Jason Alexander, Jane Lynch, Vanessa Williams, and Brad Garrett are a major plus in final film effect.

Five animals journey to Delhi, India’s parliament to ask questions and resolve difficulties between the co-existence of animals with humans.

FIRST THEY KILLED MY FATHER (Video Release USA 2017)

First They Killed My Father—is a gruesome reality portrait of 1975 Cambodia under the Khmer Rouge regime as told through the eyes of a seven-year-old girl. It’s a ‘do not miss’ historical documentary based on actual events. Angelina Jolie directs this film and manages to pull her audience into the drama with surprising power and intensity. While using a two-dimensional media that by its very nature of presentation sterilizes all life experience due to the lack of involvement of three of our five senses, Jolie still manages to manipulate and involve the remaining two senses of sight and sound into a merciless voyage into constant terror. Even if viewed with a disciplined intellectual approach, the film relentlessly pursues the viewer making it nearly impossible to divorce oneself from the misery of this situation. It starkly reminds us that the price of war, the seeking of power, and the resulting slaughter of millions of humans on the altar that is high handedly called the Altar of Change and Necessity is far too costly a price to pay for egocentric goals that do not seek peace and harmony as the first priority of human existence on this planet.

The film is not for the faint of heart, but is a well-told and needs-to-be told story to remind us that we, as a human whole, need to be completely involved in a deep and lasting change of heart that values and appreciates human life and takes care to establish the wellbeing of all persons no matter their creed, ideology, political belief, nationality, race, or other perceived difference.

LOOK WHO’S BACK (Theatrical Release USA 2015)

Look Who’s Back, a German comic spoof based on ‘what if Adolf Hitler woke up with the same lust to rule and to enact his political agenda in the year 2014,’ made an excellent box office profit in Germany. The script is novel and well-acted by cast members. It seems incredible that this concept is well-received even as dark comedy.

Storyline

In 2014 Adolf Hitler (Oliver Masucci) resurrects to an entirely new Germany not agreeable to his taste and sets about rising in influence and power through strategic use of Youtube, the Internet, and television. As his audience increases, his belief that he has been brought back for a reason increases.

RABIN, THE LAST DAY (Theatrical Release USA 2016)

Rabin, the Last Day follows the events of November 4, 1995, the day Israel’s Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin was assassinated. This documentary is a very good study in the perils of leadership, the balancing of power, and the necessary courage required for leaders to move forward despite their extremely tenuous hold on life when decisions are not well received. This documentary contains outstanding re-enactments as well as terrific archival footage to make its points. The film is a very good choice of cultural study for anyone studying Judaism. It’s a documentary of excellence.

DOCTOR STRANGE (Theatrical Release USA 2016)

Doctor Strange contains great imaginative concepts such as the ability to use the astral dimensions, destroy or manipulate the three guarded sanctums that protect earth, bend time through the use of an infinity stone, and create infinite time loops. But special effect scenes such as the scene where buildings bend over themselves create a ho-hum feeling because they’ve been used years before as in the Christopher Nolan/Leonardo DiCaprio Inception film. While that effect was a WOW! in Inception due to its novelty and high quality, it didn’t work for this movie not only for its lack of novelty, but due to its poor quality in execution. Expect a sequel due to its box office success and its Marvel Comic status. Benedict Cumberbatch is an excellent choice for the character Dr. Strange.

BEAUTY AND THE BEAST (Theatrical Release USA 2017)

Beauty and the Beast is a live action remake of the classically animated Beauty and the Beast story. It tops the charts for profitability generating over a billion dollars at box office, but fails in originality. The music is terrific. Emma Watson sings and one immediately thinks she should do more musicals. She shows a certain sophistication reminiscent of some of Julie Andrews’ earlier musical films; however, she lacks the certain sweet innocence that is necessary to pull this film into the best of the best category.

Special notice to Actor Cliff Curtis for good performance.

Why Stop Now takes a series of tough life events where one asks, ‘What else could go wrong in this kid’s life?’ and produces comedy. The film may be one of Jesse Eisenberg’s better works since The Social Network and Zombieland. He is well supported by actor Tracy Morgan. This movie will age well and has potential to become one of those re-watchable films in the category of A Christmas Story.

Eli Bloom (Jesse Eisenberg) masterfully juggles a drug-addicted Mother, Penny Bloom (Melissa Leo), who desperately needs to enter rehab, a younger sister Nicole Bloom (Emma Rayne Lyle)  who intimidates classmates with a threatening hand puppet, drug dealer Sprinkles (Tracy Morgan) to whom his mother owes past-due monies, an aunt Trish (Stephanie March) who locks herself in the bathroom to stay away from her drug-addicted sister, a budding romance with a girl named Cloe (Sarah Ramos), and his need to perform well at a professional music audition.

Dark Was the Night enters the realm of the improbable as far too many animals and humans go missing before real action is taken to solve the problem. The monster is ‘cool’ with its three-cloven hoof tracks, but overall the movie just doesn’t ‘cut it’. It seems Directors and Producers think putting someone like Lukas Haas in the film is going to pull a low B-grade film into a higher classification. It’s a pleasure to see Kevin Durand on screen.

ALIEN ARRIVAL * (Theatrical Release USA 2016)

Alien Arrival complicates itself to the point of confusion with its fractured sci-fi script. This challenge is exacerbated with weak acting, poor direction, and lack of sufficient detail to allow those critical transitioning points that bridge the gap between knowing what is going on and not knowing what is going on. Critical, need-to-know information is presented too late in the script to maximize understanding. An example is: wondering why can a main character breathe without a mask, why can he live in a ship with little to no oxygen, food, and water for three years. The fact that he adapted to his environment is presented too late in the story and is one of the many reasons the story delivers a less than average performance. The main actor Dan Mor has good screen presence and, with training, has the possibility of being an outstanding thriller/action character actor.

Generation Iron 2 successfully outperforms its prequel Generation Iron with an informative format that focuses on the changes occurring within the professional body building community. The movie follows the professional careers of the world’s current top body builders and successfully generates new enthusiasm for this sport as it introduces Australian Callum Von Moger who presents an uncanny déjà vu a la Arnold Schwarzenegger to the screen. This film brings body building out of the woods into the light again.

Facing Darkness—admirable documentary bolstered by well-placed interviews and professional camera technique—does a great job detailing the deadliness of Ebola as doctors and volunteers fight to stop its progress in West Africa. It’s a Christian documentary film that highlights the work of Billy and Franklin Graham’s charity, Samaritan’s Purse.

POOH’S HEFFALUMP MOVIE (Theatrical Release USA 2005)

Pooh’s Heffalump Movie kindly reminds us that where there is fear, it can be present for no real reason and, very often, is shared equally by everyone sharing the circumstance. Disney creates another gentle Winnie-the-Pooh story that outclasses some previously produced Pooh stories because it consistently returns to several basic, real-to-life themes rather than a single theme—everyone wants and needs acceptance; love is helping others to feel that they have acceptance and place; excitement about new things is a large step in understanding how to overcome fear and to learn how to love; and it’s important to strive for the happy ending for everyone in the story. The script’s dialogue is good with good timing and excellent portrayal of story. The single, small criticism concerns a scene where Piglet makes lasting friends with Lumpy, a small Heffalump, while playing in a pond. The music does not fit this scene. It is too upbeat for the situation. The music is not right for the occasion as if added as an unnecessary fill-in due to time or budget restriction. This whole scene needs deletion or improvement.

Yes. This film is a mini-classic for children that has real meaning similar to the sweet reminders of the Jimmy Stewart movie, “It’s A Wonderful Life”. It’s moral lessons are kindly and softly presented. It’s a good instructive presented in entertainment formatting. This film can be loved by adults as well as children.
