BABIES * (Released to Theaters USA 2010)

Ben Meyers’ rating: 4.5|5.0 Stars ìììì

Babies
—a French documentary—defines itself as the reality of the word ‘lovable’. It’s a not-to-be-missed film that tells its story so well that one does not realize there is no narration throughout the film. No interpretation, no judgment, no comparisons. This is s 'feel good' documentary that delivers  a knowing that the world has very high chances for survival due to the hardiness of its offspring. Thank you to Director Thomas Balmè who caught the beauty of the many ways that we survive on this planet and the reality that it’s all okay. Well done. Thank you.

Ben Meyers’ rating: 4.6|5.0 Stars ìììì

A Cat in Paris—
good storyline, simply animated French featuremay be a little complicated to follow for the younger crowd, but will still please. The story, about a jewel thief named Nico (voice of Steve Blum), a black cat, and a little girl named Zoé (voice of Lauren Weintraub), involves a treacherous nanny, Claudine (voice of Anjelica Huston), and an evil gangin a superb tale about stealing, kidnapping, and justice. FREAKONOMICS: THE MOVIE (Released to Tribeca Film Festival Manhattan Borough New York New York USA 2010)

Ben Meyers’ rating: 3.9|5.0 Stars ììì

Freakonomics: The Movie—
documentary broken into four segments—endeavors to explore the value of a name, corruption in Sumo wrestling, late 1990s United States crime decline, and value of bribing to induce change in human behavior. The film appears disjointed and fragmented, does not adequately provide alternative viewpoints for argumentation, lacks resolution and emotional appeal, and falls deeply short on why any of this is relevant information. The film lost nearly $2,800,000 in box office. While the two narrators are personable, their combined personality is not enough to pull this film off.

HEREAFTER (Theatrical Release USA 2010)

Ben Meyers’ rating: 4.1|5.0 Starsìììì

Hereafter
—definitely worth watching, not boring for even 1 of its 129 minutes—confirms the talents of Clint Eastwood as a terrific film director as well as completes what everyone knows, that Peter Morgan (The Queen, Frost/Nixon, The Last King of Scotland) is a superb writer. The film, well executed under Eastwood, brilliantly showcases the talents of its actors and actresses, makes one seriously think about life after death subject matter while successfully intertwining three stories into one narrative. Excellent casting choices include Matt Damon, Frankie McLaren, George McLaren, and Cécile De France (as Marie Lelay).

Film Poster Courtesy of Wikipedia

Storyline

Journalist Marie Lelay (Cécile De France) sits on a bed in a Thailand hotel room working. She gets up and tells her lover, Television Producer Didier (Thierry Neuvic) to get up; but, he wants to sleep for another half hour. So, Marie Lelay orders room service breakfast after which she goes to the local market stands to shop. The camera shows an ocean tidal wave approaching the beach and surrounding commercial district. As the tidal wave crashes through the town, Marie Lelay tries to save herself and a local girl. A boat hits Marie Lelay in the head, knocking her unconscious. While she is unconscious, she experiences visions of the afterlife. After house residents rescue her, she survives and goes on to research others’ afterlife experiences. Her life intertwines and overlaps the lives of psychic George Lonegan (Matt Damon) and foster child, Marcus (Frankie and George McLaren).

COYOTE FALLS (Released to Theaters USA 2010)

Ben Meyers’ Rating: 3.9|5.0 Starsììì

Coyote Falls—not as good as the original Wile E. Coyote/Roadrunner short film classics from the 1949 era and forward—retains the tropes of Coyote and Roadrunner and that inclusion of well-known identifiers makes this story work. The portrayal and presentation work at the suitable to good range. The animation uses computer generation and is 'awesome'. It's an interesting and fun watch.

RUST (Released to DVD World-wide 2010)

Ben Meyers’ Rating: 3.6|5.0 Starsììì

Rust—interesting to okay—does not 'get off the ground' until Corbin Bernsen's character, James Moore, begins unraveling the story behind the arson of a local home and who really is to blame for that arson. It's a story of justice and rightful assignment of guilt, but it takes over 40 minutes of film to 'get' there.  This Christian film has places where the acting is 'over the top' good and other places where the acting is almost average. Corbin Bernsen works at a surprisingly high skill level, has over 261 film and TV shows appearances with a new 10 credits scheduled. He will be a good actor to follow with that strong work ethic.

Storyline

James Moore returns to his small town and finds it pretty much the same except for an arson incident that police have closed due to a confession. James Moore, despite the confession, does not believe the blame has been placed rightly and pursues the truth on his own time.

Additional Thanks

Thank you to Director Corbin Bernsen for directing effort. Thank you to Producer Chris Aronoff, Corbin Bernsen, and Dana Lesiuk, and Co-Producer James Greilick, for making the film possible. THE GRACE CARD (Released to Theaters USA 2010)

Ben Meyers’ Rating: 3.7|5.0 Starsììì

The Grace card works like a Cops reality television show and has a strong documentary-style formatting in some places. Everything in the movie (presentation, portrayal, acting) works within the okay to suitable range. The believability/realism work at the lower end of the spectrum but the movie has a surprise conclusion that works really well.

Maybe. This Christian film has better organization than Rust, another Christian-themed movie that appears on the same four DVD disc pack as this one. Overall, the story is a light, afternoon watch that does not require tremendous emotional involvement.

I WAS A 7th GRADE DRAGON SLAYER* (Released to DVD USA 2010)

Ben Meyers’ Rating: 3.0|5.0 Starsììì

I was a 7th Grade Dragon Slayer—weak—is a good example of a movie that needs an all around upgrade. The camerawork is, at best, television quality, not movie quality, with too much lighting in many of the daytime scenes. It is not a good quality choice for family home entertainment.

Storyline

A young teenage boy and his friends try to prove that card game characters have some validity in reality.

 Additional Thanks

Thank you to Director Andy Lauer for directing effort. Thank you to Producer Ryil Adamson, and Gavin Gillette for making the film possible. Cast includes Lea Thompson, Hunter Allan, Eric Lutes, Richard Sellers, Abby Victor, Ryan Bradley Norris, Jordan Reynolds, Amy Pietz, Andy Lauer, and Wendie Malick.

Buy a ticket? Yes? No? Maybe?

No. This film regularly uses product and famous person references to 'beef up' its story but its not done in a subliminal manner. The movie needs a rewrite, better portrayal, trained actors, and improved lighting for its camerawork.

FREE WILLY: ESCAPE FROM PIRATE'S COVE (Released to DVD World-WIde 2010)

Ben Meyers’ Rating: 3.5|5.0 Starsììì

Free Willy: Escape from Pirate's Cove—average film—works below par of the pod of Free Willy movies. The film has a weak script. Some actors do not seem as connected to storyline as they should be. This film has a suitable/okay portrayal and presentation. It does not fit well with the earlier presentations of the Free Willy movies. Watch for Bindi Irwin, daughter of Steve and Terri Irwin, in her leading role in this movie.

Buy a ticket? Yes? No? Maybe?

Maybe. It might work for children because of the adventure/drama and seeing a killer whale, which if one does a little research will find that the whale is an animatronic and animated whale. But for adults, they will see that the acting and storyline are not very good.

THE LAST SONG (Theatrical Release USA 2010)

Ben Meyers’ Rating: 3.5|5.0 Starsììì

The Last Song—weird story—is not well-written nor is it well-cast. Miley Cyrus does not cast well with Liam Hemsworth and does not play the wild child well. There is no adult theme here and the storyline completely lacks cohesive presentation almost as if written by a very young, immature child. The story is a downer with no redemptive factor to save it. It is supposed to offer a good, teen love flick but completely fails to deliver that type of story.

TAPPED (Video on Demand (VOD) USA 2010)

 Ben Meyers’ rating: 2.8|5.0 Starsìì

Tapped—well-interviewed—does not present the broader historical perspective about water rights, works statistics, and forces an audience into a one-sided viewpoint. The film creates a need to do extensive research to make decisions on the viability of the presented argument when a documentary should have done the research for the audience. There is not enough evidence in this film to make it worth watching.
