THE BEYOND (Berlin Sci-fi Filmfest Berlin Germany 2017)

 Ben Meyers’ rating: 3.9|5.0 Starsììì

T
he Beyond—weird story—takes careful watching to follow its complicated, intellectual plot. It borders on the edge of slow, but that helps to understand its complex story. The actors and actresses add an international flare that is always welcome and adds interest to its presentation.

STRANGER THAN FICTION (Theatrical Release USA 2006)

 Ben Meyers’ rating: 4.4|5.0 Starsìììì

Stranger Than Fiction—creative, fresh—accesses the acting talents of Will Farrell and Emma Thompson to tell its story. Add Maggie Gyllenhaal and guest star Dustin Hoffman and you’ve got cake with frosting. When Queen Latifah shows up, it’s flare on the cake’s candles. It’s a little piece of WOW entertainment that would be easy to miss. Just watch it. It’s fun entertainment with a terrific storyline.

THE TRAMP (Theatrical Release USA 1915)

 Ben Meyers’ rating: 3.9|5.0 Starsììì

The Tramp—silent short film—must be watched carefully to follow its storyline because the story runs fast and it is easy to miss something even with a turn of the head. It tells its story very well and it’s a wonderful introduction to Charlie Chaplin’s acting talents.

TERMINATOR: DARK FATE (Theatrical Release USA 2019)

 Ben Meyers’ rating: 4.1|5.0 Starsìììì

Terminator: Dark Fate, actually better than the last film Terminator Genisys, has an improved plotline/storyline. However, The Terminator, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, and maybe the Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines still top the entertainment value of the Terminator series. The James Cameron-directed Terminator movies flow better than the rest of the series including the Jonathan Mostow-directed film, Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines. Terminator: Dark Fate’s acting is good with Linda Hamilton from the first two films reprising her role after 37 years has passed since the 1984 appearance of The Terminator in theaters. This film has good actors: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Mackenzie Davis, Natalie Reyes, Gabriel Luna, and Diego Boneta. Overall, the movie is a good watch, but it seems the series has almost run its course even though the story has been set for a sequel.

TREMORS: SHRIEKER ISLAND (Direct to Video Release USA 2020)

 Ben Meyers’ rating: 3.6|5.0 Starsììì

Tremors: Shrieker Island—either seems better than Tremors 2 through 6 or we just got used to the series and cannot tell anymore what is good or bad—serves Tremors fans with the same plotline: Take out the Graboids and Shriekers so the human race can sustain itself. Average acting and portrayal, nothing new here except some new actors. Michael Gross, as Burt Gummer, sustains his role to lead a Graboid hunt.

Additional characters/cast include: Freddie (Jackie Cruz), Burt Gummer (Michael Gross), Jimmy (Jon Heder), Bill (Richard Brake), Jas (Caroline Langrishe), Anna (Cassie Clare), Mohawk (Bear Williams), Hunter (Ron Smooreburg), Researcher Iris (Iris Park), Mr. Bowtie (Sahajak Boonthanakit), Snub nose hunter (Brahim Chab), Ishimon (Boonma Lamphol), Pretty Boy (David Asavanond), Burly Hunter (Alexander Winters), and Wall Street (Randy Kalsi).

Buy a ticket? Yes? No? Maybe?

Maybe. The first film has a cult classic likableness that this movie fails to catch as completely. Its profit is about the same as all the other Tremors movies and suggests that Tremors made a sustainable income for many years for a certain set of actors and will continue to provide income as the series moves into the definition of cult classic. It supports Tremors fans.

DAVID ATTENBOROUGH: A LIFE ON OUR PLANET (Theatrical Release UK 2020)

 Ben Meyers’ rating: 4.6|5.0 Starsìììì

David Attenborough: A Life on our Planet—exceptionally sophisticated and well presented documentary—completes itself well with David Attenborough interviews and fantastic videos of scenery around the world by some of our best photographers. The camera work is beyond critical analysis. David Attenborough’s theories use broad and strong logic to support the environmentalist mindset and excellently accomplishes that without offense. The one weakness in this documentary is that it gives no position of another possible side of the story…but the scope of knowledge that goes into the final conclusion forgives that lack. Brain stimulating and  mind expanding film encourages an exploration of points made in the discussion. The film is a good watch for family and friends and makes a stimulating afternoon watch.

OKKO’S INN (Annecy International Animation Film Festival, Annecy France 2018)

Ben Meyers’ rating: 4.1|5.0 Starsìììì

Okko’s Inn has difficulty creating relatability to its characters and seems a bit boring throughout its story. The plotline is jagged and uneven, almost disjointed at times. The idea is great, but it needs smoothing to be a better watch. Still, it is a good visit into other cultures’ interpretation and viewpoint of similar ideas in one’s own culture.

THE COOK (Theatrical Release USA 1918)

 Ben Meyers’ rating: 3.9|5.0 Starsììì

The Cook—silent short film—emphasizes the challenges a waiter and a cook have while trying to make restaurant meals. This particular movie may not be as good as others from the silent era, but it is a good dip into the past with Roscoe ‘Fatty’ Arbuckle and Buster Keaton. It’s comical and light on the mind.

Buy a ticket? Yes? No? Maybe?

Yes. Surprisingly good entertainment. The silence is welcome. The shortness of the story is welcome…busy society needs a short piece of entertainment that is light on the mind, has morality, and does not exhaust the psyche with heavy play on evoking strong emotion. The black and white or light and soft colorization of an old black and white is welcome. The slower pace is welcome. The lack of reproving for the realities of life is welcome. The down-to-earth subject matter is welcome. And, it is a good thing to see how humans, human needs, and human thinking really haven’t changed that much. It’s a different time and different place, but presents the same challenges, desires, and comical situations without excuses. This is an easy, short watch to unwind at the end of taut work days before going to bed at night. It does not define what life should be and demands its audience do the same. It just is…it is not manipulative…and that is welcome.

The Abyss has some 5-star, phenomenal acting by Ed Harris about three quarters of the way through the movie.
