THE CLAUS FAMILY (Theatrical Release Belgium 2020)

The Claus Family—cute and sweet—presents a small twist on the Santa Claus story but does not have that freshness that an audience hopes for in a Christmas story. The storyline is a light, run-of-the-mill piece that is clean and decent for a child’s bedtime watch. The concept, as presented, needs a bit of rewriting to make the film pop. It is what it is…an easy-on-the-mind watch.

THE REVENANT (Theatrical Release USA 2015)

The Revenant—great to fabulous cinematography—needs some adjustment in scene timing. An example is the length of time it takes the camera to travel along the river to reach where the actors are hunting moose. The fight scenes  and overall presentation bring the movie to a B-grade quality. While the movie’s initial scenes work at some of the highest levels of quality entertainment, that quality does not hold throughout the movie, almost as if ‘we have shown what we can do and now we are bored with holding to that standard.’ For those who are not familiar with the Hugh Glass story, this film is a great introduction to a piece of inspirational Northwest American history. Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy interpret their roles well. Watch Will Poulter as he shows good potential in this film.

HITMAN: AGENT 47 (Theatrical Release USA 2015)

Hitman: Agent 47—definition of ‘cool’—sets Rupert Friend as a front runner for film casting departments. Hannah Ware plays off Rupert Friend well. It‘s rather a shock to see Ciaran Hinds in the film but he has a very good presence in any film he is in and he does not shun expectations in this movie as he works to interpret the role of Litvenko. The story is well written, fun to watch, and easily sets itself up for a sequel.

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN (Theatrical Release USA 2012)

The Amazing Spider-Man—remake of the 2002 Spider-man movie—plays Andrew Garfield in the role of Spider-Man; Sally Fields and Martin Sheen for the roles of Peter Parker’s Aunt and Uncle. While the screen presence of these three seems stronger than the 2002 version, the acting itself is not quite as good as the 2002 version. Watch for the cameo appearance of Stan Lee, the comic book creator of Spider-man, as the school librarian in a comical scene that defines the word ‘oblivious’.

THE SUMMIT OF THE GODS (Theatrical Release France 2021)

The Summit of the Gods—French/Japanese anime—initially seems unclear about the purpose of its production. But the storyline and presentation soon supersede this situation because there is a certain captivation that works very well to keep the audience involved to the point that one almost forgets one is watching an anime rather than a live action film. The acting, voicing, and animation are fabulous. The bitter/sweet conclusion is the final touch that makes the movie worthy of adding to the home video library.

THE BILLION DOLLAR HOBO (Theatrical Release USA 1977)

The Billion Dollar Hobo—runs a small train track from good to okay and back again—features actors Tim Conway and Will Geer who work an okay rags to riches story with the twist 'if you live as a hobo for awhile you inherit my fortune.’ The movie has the highly identifiable 1970s background music for its scenes. But there is no conclusion. The audience is left in the wings waiting for the tie that will make it all work and there is no tie. The movie just stops. This leaves a viewer unsettled and quite unhappy. There is nothing new, creative, or fresh here for the film overall. It does provide an academic study on the comedy skills of Tim Conway, but better study sources would be the Tim Conway skits as performed in The Carol Burnett Show.

STAR WARS: EPISODE VII-THE FORCE AWAKENS (Theatrical Release USA 2015)

Star Wars: Episode VII-The Force Awakens—introduces new villain Kylo Ren (Adam Driver)—retains Harrison Ford, Chewbacca, R2D2, CP30, Mark Hamill, and Carrie Fisher from earlier episodes of Stars Wars. The film’s new cast is not as strong or as charismatic as the original cast and this failure weakens the overall effect of the movie. The first five actors, Oscar Isaac, John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, an elderly man, and Adam Driver, need more force in their acting. It is not until the introduction of Harrison Ford that the movie begins to pick up strength and pace. However, the John Boyega performance does peak interest and deserves a closer watch in future performances. This movie is one of Director J. J. Abrams’ best works so far.

Eloise at Christmastime—second installment of the Eloise film series—was exclusively featured in the Wonderful World of Disney television show in the 2003 Season 45, Episode 6. The movie is cute with good acting and presentation. The film is what is expected from this movie series. Good to see Julie Andrews as the nanny. She brings back a flood of good memories which enhance this film’s entertainment potential. This is a particularly good watch for children.

Ragnarok—Norwegian thriller—works for international appeal and completely succeeds. This movie has excellent English subtitles to support its Norwegian language. The suspense has been well timed and presented. The actors have successfully portrayed and interpreted their characters. While the ending seems a bit abrupt, it is due to audience desire to see more. A sequel would be welcome. The movie could easily develop itself into a series of films that examine archaeological finds in Norway.

A New Leaf—good script, refreshing comedy—sports great acting via Walter Matthau and Elaine May. The supporting cast is excellent. The film has lost none of its ability to entertain despite its 1971 production and release date. It earns its place in the home video library for its classic comedy.

WE ARE MARSHALL (Theatrical Release USA 2006)

We Are Marshall—sports drama—lacks strength in its presentation. The entire film seems a showcase for Matthew McConaughey but he is given amateurish, weak dialogue lines so that the overall message of the movie cannot develop strongly. It seems odd that despite this  impediment, McConaughey dominates the rest of the cast including David Stratham. The movie seems to have taken a patchwork of scenes from other sports movies that have been truly inspirational and in the piecing together of those film scenes loses a type of authenticity of its own. Watch for Matthew Fox’s good film presence.

A Brilliant Young Mind—good watch—presents Asa Butterfield’s outstanding acting skills  within a framework of a story that greatly needs telling. The movie actively works to support and give courage to families raising autistic children. Sally Hawkins, as the mother to Asa Butterfield’s character, performs outstandingly. The addition of Rafe Spall to this story is terrific. The movie is a beautiful watch that has been exceptionally written, directed, and acted.

Respect—very good film—accesses the talents of Jennifer Hudson to tell the Aretha Franklin story. Forrest Whitaker plays the part of Aretha’s father and serves as the perfect casting choice for this character. The story flows well and paces well largely due to a very well written script that catches the spirit of the times as well as the culture of the times. The movie more than earns its watch.

THE GUARDIAN (Theatrical Release USA 2006)

Ben Meyers’ rating: 4.2|5.0 Starsìììì 

The Guardian—educates, entertains, action-packed, and drama-filled—begins with the question: Is it going to be a good watch, a bad watch, or a horrible watch? It takes a little time to answer that question and then with the transfer to the U.S. Coast Guard training school, the film settles into its ‘cool’ and turns into a good watch. The last 30 to 40 minutes seem to give the movie 2 conclusions, but the additional conclusion brings closure to a great story. Kevin Costner is the perfect choice for this film. Ashton Kutcher seems an odd pick for the movie, but by the concluding scenes turns into the perfect choice for his character, also. Watch for Neil McDonough. The supporting cast perform at a level that makes this movie a ‘sit and watch’ film that, overall, tells a really good story that makes a good addition to the home video library.

Tall Girl 2—story tailored for the teen audience—does not access the higher likableness of the first film, seems to run on some discord within its casting team, and presents a slight distortion from the overall first film’s ability to create likableness and sympathy for the main actress. It has lost a bit of heart that is necessary for this type of movie. This leaves almost a bad taste at the end of the film that seems quite noticeable. However, all that said, it still presents a clean, decent film that will entertain the young teen audience.

APPLE MORTGAGE CAKE (Television Release USA 2014)

Apple Mortgage Cake begins slowly and fails to connect the significance of its opening scenes until too late in its story. That late tie creates audience confusion. The dialogue about the house being held by past family members needs a critical tie that is lacking and left dangling. There is also an issue with the amount of money owed and the fact that this Mother has three sons who are healthy and able to hold after school jobs to avoid homelessness. It seems the whole burden is on the Mother with no one in her immediate family joining forces to keep the inevitable from occurring. Also, it becomes a bit of a stretch to see a ‘boyfriend’ who does little to solidly contribute to solutions to her challenges. We have 5 adult people here, 4 of whom are male, who could form a team and take employment that could solve this challenge. On the other hand, the benefit of the movie is that it allows a good look at how to help oneself through self-employment that will have much better, far-reaching solutions for this family than employment by others and the fact that the main character continues to help others even though she herself is in dire need of help. Strong backbone to that part of the story. This film overall suffers a type of unappealing slow burn that causes drag as it moves along. The acting is good to okay. The conclusion has a type of sweet/sour aftertaste due to the main characters' final decision about her boy ‘friend.’
