TREASURE PLANET (Theatrical Release USA 2002)

Treasure Planet

The concept is good. The movie is a take-off from the Robert Louis Stevenson story, Treasure Island, except it is set in galactic space rather than planet Earth. It’s a Disney creation and uses the very accomplished team of Musker and Clements to produce and direct it. The movie has almost everything going for it. The voice choices are excellent: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, David Hyde Pierce, Martin Short, and Emma Thompson. It does not play down to the child or adult audience. It has all the bells and whistles, but the bells are not ringing.

Storyline

It’s a futuristic update of Treasure Island with Jim Hawkings (voice of Joseph Gordon-Levitt) on the voyage of a lifetime.

Additional Thanks

Thank you to Director Ron Clements and John Musker for directing efforts. Thank you to Executive Producers for making the film possible. Additional characters/cast include: Mr. Arrow (voice of Roscoe Lee Browne), Onus (voice of Corey Burton), Morph (voice of Dane A. Davis), Narrator (voice of Tony Jay), Young Jim (voice of Austin Majors), Billy Bones (voice of Patrick McGoohan), Hands (voice of Michael McShane).

Buy a ticket? Yes? No? Maybe?

Maybe. It is not the best of watches but it is not horrible. The presentation and/or portrayal needs a little brushing to make this film work at a higher level.
